Baseball Starts Final Week Playoff Push With Victory

PUEBLO, CO – Colorado Christian took a significant step towards making the RMAC postseason tournament for the first time with a 7-3 victory against CSU Pueblo on Wednesday afternoon.

The win moves the Cougars into a tie for the fifth position in the RMAC standings with CSU Pueblo. Each team has a 12-20 (.387) conference record heading into the final three day of the regular season. The top six teams make the league's postseason tournament. Winning percentage decides the season ending finishing order.

Wednesday's game was a make-up from the April 25 contest that was postponed because of Covid-19 protocols.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougar bats came to life in the first two innings as they raced out to a 5-0 lead. The first three batters all registered a base knock as the offense got rolling. A Jordan Medina single started the scoring then Caden Walton hit a out-out, two-run single to right centerfield as the Cougars built a three-run cushion.

In the second frame RBI singles by Media and Blake Mattey increased the Colorado Christian lead to five runs. The scoring settled down until the fifth frame when Tommy Orr and Wyatt Crenshaw crossed the plate to push the Cougars lead to 7-0.

While the Cougars offense was humming along, Kyler Riordan was throwing his best game of the season. The righthander kept the CSU Pueblo offense off balance. He went 7.2 innings and didn't allow a Thunderwolves run until the eighth inning. He struck out a team season high nine batters. His innings pitched also represent a team high for the squad.

In the eighth stanza CSU Pueblo scored three runs with two outs in their comeback attempt. In the ninth inning JC Watne came into the game from the bullpen to shutout any potential Thunderwolves rally.

COUGAR LEADERS: Crenshaw notched a team high three hits with a pair of runs scored in his four at-bats. Also contributing to the team's 13-hit attack were Luke Thompson, Walton, Mattey and Medina who each had two hits.

UP NEXT: The Cougars travel to Grand Junction to battle No. 1 Colorado Mesa for four games beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m.
