CCU Drops Close Battle to Open RMAC Playoffs

For the first time in program history, Colorado Christian made it into the RMAC Conference playoffs where they had a Quarterfinal matchup against Westminster College. The #6 seed Cougars traveled to Salt Lake City, UT to face off against the #3 seeded Griffins on Thursday night with a trip to the semifinals on the line. The Griffins capitalized on a scoring situation in the first half to put them ahead 1-0 heading into the break, and despite a furious rally by the Cougars offense late in the second half they were unable to score the equalizer and fell by a final score of 1-0.

Both teams were familiar with each other as they met less than a week ago during the final weekend of the regular season, so both teams had an idea of the game plan that the other side had. It was a brisk start the game, with neither side able to get much of an advantage.

Finally, in the 25th minute Westminster had a throw-in deep in the Cougars zone. The Griffins capitalized on this chance as they sent a perfect pass into the middle, where their captain lobbed the ball over the outstretched arms of Max Collingwood and into the back of the net.

The defenses took center stage heading into the second half. Late in the game, CCU did their best to even things up, and had a few chances that allowed them to get the ball deep into the Westminster end of the field, but unfortunately it was not meant to be as the game finished by falling by a final score of 1-0.

Head coach Brad Camp spoke after the game about his team's efforts saying, "We played another good game tonight. They were very good defensively tonight, and we just couldn't create the one good chance we needed."

Congratulations to the Cougars for one of the best years in program history. A year which saw the Cougars have a near perfect record at home going 5-1-2, a victory over the then ranked #3 CSU Pueblo which marked the best win in program history, and securing the first RMAC Conference Playoff birth in program history. Brad Camp hinted at the future and trajectory of the program after saying, "We fly back home proud, but on the edge of our seat to start training as soon as the rules allow."
