PUEBLO, CO. – After a well fought battle and a strong third quarter, the Colorado Christian University Cougars came away with the win against the Nanooks of the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a final score of 88-79.
HOW IT HAPPENED – The Cougars were the first to score to start the game thanks to a layup from Makenna Bodette, but the 'Nooks quickly pulled away after four 3's in a row, bending the score in their favor at 12-4. At the end of the quarter, Alaska Fairbanks held the lead by 2, 20-18.
The two teams battled it out throughout the second quarter, trading leads numerous times. CCU was ahead by as much as 7-points after Regan Loconte nailed a 3 with 3:25 left, but after a pair of 3's of their own the 'Nooks took the lead by 1 with just a second left in the half.
Maintaining their offense but upping their defensive game in the third quarter finally put Colorado Christian comfortably ahead of UAF. At the 4:30 mark when the teams were tied up at 53, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to pull away, maintaining their lead through the end of the quarter and finishing with a 9-point advantage, 65-56.
Playing a relatively evenly matched final quarter, both UAF and CCU tallied 23 points. The 'Nooks shortened their deficit to just 3-points at just over six minutes left, but in just a minute a layup from Mykaela Moore, a defensive stop, then a layup from Dasiya Jones put Colorado Christian back up by 7. Alaska Fairbanks gave a valiant effort to get the lead back, but ultimately the Cougars remained steady and carried out the win with a final score of 88-79.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE – Beating themselves by 1-point from the day before, it was another high scoring game for the Cougars. Coming off the bench and leading the team in scoring, was Maggie Hutka who earned a double-double with 22-points and 12 rebounds. Also earning a double-double and bringing down the most rebounds between both teams was Agnes Paul, who finished the day even with 15-points and 15 boards. Regan Loconte finished with 16-points, 12 of those coming from beyond the arc. Rounding out the high scorers was Mykaela Moore, who had 10-points and a game high of 6 assists.
