The Cougars are looking ahead to this weekend as they have two conference games prior to the Christmas break. First, on Friday night, they will be traveling to Colorado Springs to square off against UCCS. CCU will then return to the friendly confines of the CCU Event Center on Saturday night as they take on cross town rival Regis University.
Â
In a tough matchup on Friday night, the Cougs will be taking on a talented UCCS squad which currently has an 8-3 overall record, and 2-2 in conference play. Last weekend, UCCS went 1-1 as they lost on Friday night to Colorado Mesa, but bounced back to secure the victory over Westminster on Saturday.
Â
The Mountain Lions are led on the year by a talented trio of Jon'il Fugett, Beni Fungula and Mac Stodart. Fugett leads the team as he averages 13.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG. He is the main facilitator on their offensive side of the ball as he also leads the team in assists with 46, and can also wreak havoc defensively as he has collected 20 steals this year. Fungula (11.5 PPG) and Stodart (11.2 PPG) round out players on the UCCS squad that are currently averaging in double figures for the season.
Â
The Cougars will then return home to the CCU Event Center on Saturday night to take on Regis University. Regis, who will square off with Chadron State on Friday, currently has a 4-6 record overall, and are 1-3 in conference play. Last weekend they went 1-1 as they secured a two point victory over Westminster and a narrow six point loss to Colorado Mesa. Â
Â
The Rangers are led in scoring by graduate student David Simental who is averaging 13.2 PPG. Brayden Carter also contributes to their offensive attack as he averages 10.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG. Aaron Bokol has the capabilities to be a big factor as well as he is averaging nearly a double-double with 9.8 PPG and 10.0 RPG.
Â
CCU is heading into the weekend on a two game winning streak and will be looking to increase the streak moving forward. The Cougars notched a thrilling 80-79 victory on Friday night against Chadron State in overtime, and followed that up with another close victory on Saturday night as they were on the road in Gunnison taking on Western Colorado. The Cougs have a 6-4 record overall, and are 2-2 in conference play.
Â
DJ McDonald and
Jason Gallant are two of the big offensive weapons for CCU, and they will both be looking to have major contributions this weekend. McDonald leads the team as he averages 12.9 PPG, while Gallant is right behind him with 12.2 PPG.
Noah Kon has gotten hot recently as he has scored double figures in four of the last five games, and averages 10.8 PPG.
Maro Egodotaye has an opportunity to be a difference maker, as his precision from the floor is evidenced by him shooting 68% from the floor (34-50), and adding in 5.7 RPG.
Â
CCU will head into their second straight series which will see them play one game on the road, and one game at home. The Cougars will be looking to head into the Christmas break with some momentum and secure a couple of victories.
