Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Dave Land

Long Range Attack Downs Cougars

Colorado Christian hit the road on Friday night as they traveled down to Colorado Springs to face off against the talented UCCS squad for an RMAC matchup. The 6-4 Cougs, took on the 8-3 Mountain Lions in what was a great game throughout. CCU held control for the first half and majority of the second half, but a late UCCS barrage from beyond the three point line eventually overcame the Cougs as they fell to the Mountain Lions by a final score of 92-86.

CCU grabbed the early lead as they jumped out an early 7-2 lead less than two minutes into play as the Cougars opened the game 3-3 from the floor including a DJ McDonald three pointer. UCCS refused to let the game get away from them early on, as they were able to battle back and cut into the Cougars lead. The only lead that the Mountain Lions had in the first half was when they kicked off the scoring to take a 2-0 lead to begin the game. Other than that, the Cougs held the advantage throughout the first half of the game. Heading into the half, CCU was able to stretch their lead and take a 48-41 lead into the break.

In the first half, the Cougs were led by Jason Gallant who tallied 14 points in the half on 5-9 shooting from the field, and 2-3 from beyond the arc. DJ McDonald and Noah Kon also finished the first half in double figures as they each netted 10 points apiece. Nic Zeil utilized a strong start to the game as he finished the half with six points and led the team with four rebounds. CCU finished the first half shooting over 60% from the field (17-28), and 50% from downtown (5-10).

The second half continued the back and forth battle between the two teams, but CCU continued to hold onto the lead throughout the opening 10 minutes of the second half leading by a score of 71-65. With 8:30 left in the game, UCCS hit a jumper to cap off a 5-0 run to cut the Cougar lead down to just one at 71-70. After a made basket by CCU, the Mountain Lions answered with a three pointer to tie the game 73-73 with under seven minutes left. UCCS too the lead back a minute later, marking the first lead for them since the opening minute of the game when the score was 2-0 in their favor. From that point, UCCS took control of the game despite the Cougs best effort.

The big difference in the second half was the difference between the two sides in their abilities to hit the three point shot. After going 5-10 in the first half, the Cougs cooled off in the second half only shooting 1-7. UCCS on the other hand got hot from beyond the arc in the second half as they hit 8-16 from downtown, and overall for the game went 14-32.

Despite the best effort from Colorado Christian, they were unable to overcome the deficit as they eventually fell by a final score of 86-92.

CCU was led in scoring in the game by Noah Kon who finished with 21 points and wreaked havoc on the defensive end as he came up with four steals in the game. Jason Gallant also had a big game as he finished with 20 points followed by DJ McDonald who tallied 17 points and Isaiah Alonzo with 14 points.

Colorado Christian will return home for their next game tomorrow night as they take on Regis University at the CCU Event Center. Tip is scheduled for 7PM MST.
