Colorado Christian took the floor on Saturday night as they were looking to take home the victory against CSU Pueblo. However, the Thunderwolves took flight in the second half as they were able to defeat CCU by a final score of 68-55.
Â
How it Happened – The first half was a defensive battle as each team fought for position throughout the first 20 minutes of the game. Five minutes into the game, the score remained tied at 4-4, but then CCU began to turn things up a bit as
Jason Gallant nailed a three pointer and
Nic Zeil followed with an acrobatic layup while being fouled and sunk the free throw to convert the three point play to give CCU the 10-6 advantage. However, the Cougs were unable to pull away, as CSUP hit timely shots to keep the score close throughout the half. Freshman
Maro Egodotaye got into the action quite a bit in the first half as he finished with eight points and also made his presence felt on the defensive end with two blocks. CSU Pueblo hit some late free throws to take a slim two point lead heading into halftime 29-27
Â
The Cougs headed into the second half trailing by just two points, which they quickly erased shortly after the half began.
Maro Egodotaye continued his torrid start from the field as he grabbed a rebound with the shot clock winding down and had no other choice than to put a shot up from beyond the arc, but that was no trouble for Maro as he nailed the three pointer which gave the Cougars the lead back 34-32 with just under 17 minutes remaining in the game. The teams went back and forth for a few more minutes as CCU still held onto a narrow lead 39-38, but then the tides seemed to turn as CSU Pueblo converted a layup while being fouled and converted the free throw to give them a 41-39 lead with less than 13 minutes left in the game.
Â
From that point CSUP went on a 15-2 run over a five minute stretch which seized control for them as they led by a 55-41 score. Regardless of the score, CCU refused to give up and continued to fight hard in the game and attempted to battle back into it.
Noah Kon hit a jumper with just under six minutes left which cut the deficit back down to single digits as they trailed 55-47. The Cougs got it to within seven with 2:30 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. Unfortunately, a comeback was not in the cards for the Cougs tonight, as they eventually fell by a final score of 68-55.
Â
Beyond the Box Score – Maro Egodotaye led the Cougars in scoring as he had a perfect night from the field. He finished the game with 15 points on 7-7 shooting from the floor, and 1-1 from beyond the arc.
Noah Kon also had a solid night offensively as he finished with 13 points.
DJ McDonald finished with nine points and led CCU with four assists in the game.
