CCU took to their home field at All Star Park on Saturday afternoon to square off against Regis University for the second and third games of their series. Colorado Christian used a strong offensive performance in game one of two to secure the victory by a final score of 10-4. In game number two, Regis got their revenge as they secured the split after defeating CCU by a final score of 7-2.
Â
Game 1: The Cougars got things going early and often as they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two innings of play.
Caden Walton started the second inning off with a sharp single through the right side of the infield, followed by a double from
Luke Thompson that pushed Walton to third base. After scoring the first two runs of the game thanks in part to defensive miscues,
Gabe Ramos delivered the second Cougars double of the inning which scored
Andrew Lloyd. After Frankie Shearn singled and advanced Ramos to third, the heart of the order inflicted damage.
Eli Ludwig doubled down the right field line for an RBI, then
Wyatt Crenshaw followed with another double to score two more and push the lead to 6-0.
Â
After Regis scored two runs in their half of the third inning, CCU delivered an answer in the bottom half.
Eli Ludwig singled to drive in
Gabe Ramos and
Boedy Flores who had both singled leading off the inning. The 8-2 lead was more than enough for Colorado Christian starter
Robby Caro. Caro was strong on the mound and fell just one out short of collecting the complete game. Caro finished the day going 6 2/3 innings scattering seven hits, allowed four runs and struck out seven.
Â
Frankie Shearn,
Eli Ludwig,
Wyatt Crenshaw,
Caden Walton and
Luke Thompson all collected two hits in the game.
Gabe Ramos finished the game perfect at the plate going 3-3 with a double and two RBI.
Â
Game 2: In the second game of the doubleheader, CCU struggled to get their offense going as Regis held them scoreless through five innings. Regis came out of the gates on fire as they were able to score two in the first inning, two more in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Â
As they have done all year, the Cougars once again attempted to rally and overcome the deficit late in the game. The Cougars got on the board in the sixth inning thanks to three consecutive hits with two outs.
Wyatt Crenshaw singled to keep the inning going and came in to score the first run for the Cougs on a double by
Jordan Medina.
Caden Walton delivered an RBI single through the right side to score Medina and CCU trailed by just three as the score was 5-2 heading into the final inning.
Â
Regis took the momentum back in the seventh inning as they pushed their lead back to five runs thanks to a two out two run homerun. Colorado Christian was unable to rally back in the seventh inning and fell by a final score of 7-2.
Â
CCU now has a record of 6-13 overall, and 4-3 in conference play. They will look to get back into the win column and pick up the victory in the series finale on Monday afternoon at All Star Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3PM MST. Â Â
