CCU Drops Opener at UCCS

Colorado Christian began their series with UCCS on Thursday afternoon in Colorado Springs. Despite a furious ninth inning rally, the Cougars fell by a final score of 16-11. UC-Colorado Springs used a strong middle inning surge to jump out to the lead which they were able to hold onto in the end.

CCU got off to a blazing start thanks to the top of the order. Frankie Shearn had a one out single to get on base in front of Wyatt Crenshaw who delivered as he smashed a homerun deep over the right field fence. The homerun for Crenshaw gives him 10 on the season. He now becomes only the fifth CCU player to ever reach the double-digit mark for homeruns in a single season. That gave the Cougars the early 2-0 lead which remained the score until the bottom of the second inning when UCCS was able to push across two runs of their own to tie the game.

The Cougars quickly jumped back in front in the third inning as Jordan Medina singled him Frankie Shearn who had singled earlier in the inning. Colorado Christian held onto the 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when UCCS scored twice to take their first lead of the game. CCU wasted little time in regaining the lead as they scored two more in the fifth inning. Caden Walton scored the first run as his presence on the base paths led to him scoring on a balk. Jordan Medina gave the team the lead back with another RBI single to go ahead 5-4.

The back-and-forth battle between the two conference foes continued as UCCS scored four runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead. Russell Cruz opened the sixth inning with a pinch-hit homerun to start the comeback attempt and cut the deficit down to just two. Gabe Ramos followed up with a double to keep the pressure on and eventually scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Caden Walton as they trailed by just one with the score 8-7 after six innings of play.

UC-Colorado Springs began to pull away in the bottom of the sixth inning as they found their power swing and scored three times thanks to two homeruns. They kept the pressure on CCU after holding the Cougars scoreless in the seventh they went on to score four more runs in the bottom half of seventh, and one more in the bottom of the eighth to take a 16-7 lead heading into the last inning.

Colorado Christian refused to go down without a fight as they mounted a comeback attempt with their final three outs. Jordan Medina opened the ninth inning with a single and was followed by a Luke Thompson double. Russell Cruz smashed his second home run of the game deep to left center field to bring the Cougars to within six as the score was now 16-10. Gabe Ramos kept the rally going as he singled. After the second out was record CCU struck again thanks to Caden Walton who tripled down the right field line which scored Ramos and got the Cougars within five at 16-11, but that was all they could push across as that was final score.

With the loss, the CCU record now sits at 12-21 overall and 8-9 in conference play. They will be back in action for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon as they continue their series with UCCS on the road. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12PM MST with game two immediately after.
