CCU Falls to Thunderwolves

Colorado Christian took the field on Saturday afternoon to face off against CSU Pueblo for game three of their four game series. On a windy day, the Cougars dropped the game to the Thunderwolves by a final score of 13-8.

CSUP jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after hitting a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning. CCU immediately responded in the bottom half of the second as Gabe Ramos blasted a solo homerun deep over the rightfield wall to make the score 2-1 and bring the Cougars within one after the first two innings of play.

The Thunderwolves kept the pressure on in the third inning as they were able to cross the plate three times to make the score 5-1 in their favor. CCU threatened to score in the third inning, but were unfortunately able to push any runs across as we left two runners in scoring position to end the inning. CSU-Pueblo continued to build on their lead over the course of the next few innings as they tallied two more in the fourth inning and once more in the fifth inning to take the 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Drew Lloyd opened up the bottom of the fifth in style as he tripled down the line in right field to give the Cougars a great scoring opportunity to open the inning. Kade Carney followed up the triple by drawing a walk to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Drew Lloyd eventually came around to score in the inning which made the score 8-2 in favor of CSUP heading into the sixth inning.

The Cougars got a strong relief outing on the mound from Saxton Sorenson as he was able to keep CSUP scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings which gave CCU a chance to chip away at the deficit. Jordan Medina opened up the sixth inning with a double to right centerfield and eventually came around to score on a passed ball to continue to cut into the Thunderwolves lead.

After holding CSUP scoreless in the seventh inning, CCU made a major comeback as they attempted to get back even. Wyatt Crenshaw accounted for the first RBI as he hit a sacrifice fly which allowed Kade Carney to score who had walked earlier in the inning. Next came Jordan Medina who smacked another double which scored Frankie Shearn and Kade Carney. Russell Cruz followed with another double to score Medina and bring the Cougars within one as the score sat at 8-7 heading into the final two innings.

However, it wasn't meant to be as CSU-Pueblo scored four in the eighth inning and once more in the ninth to regain control. CCU scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all they could get as they fell by a final score of 13-8.

With the loss, the Cougars record now sits at 13-27 overall and 9-14 in RMAC play. They will take on CSUP on Sunday afternoon for the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30PM MST.
