LAKEWOOD,CO- The Cougars took on Colorado Mesa for the second doubleheader in as many days on Sunday morning. Colorado Christian could not find the offense needed to win in a pair of losses, 3-1 and 11-0.
GAME ONE
The Cougars struck first in the bottom of the first inning, getting several runners on after a walk and hit by pitch before Piper Lujan smacked an RBI single. The two teams battled from there, as the pitching and defense began to play a prominent role in the game.Â
Alexis Hamilton got out of jams in the second and third inning, leaving a combined five runners stranded, but she could not hold down Colorado Mesa in the fourth. Leadoff hitter Ashley Bradford blasted a three-run homer to centerfield to give her team a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars left a number of runners stranded as they hit into several double plays with a runner on first, and the Mavericks closed out a 3-1 victory in game one.
Hamilton takes just her second loss of the year despite a seven-inning outing with four strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO
Intent on picking up the split, Colorado Mesa did just about everything right in the second contest. The Mavericks got on the board first with a two-run blast in the second and an RBI double in the same inning made it 3-0. A solo shot in the third made it 4-0 early.
Colorado Christian did all they could, drawing several leadoff walks, but the offense struggled to put the ball in play against pitcher Paige Adair. A wild pitch brought home another run in the fourth to make it 5-0 as Mesa stretched the lead. Things got away from the Cougars in the sixth as a grand slam and two-run homer made it 11-0, and Adair closed out a no-hitter to claim the victory via run-rule in the sixth.
UP NEXT- Colorado Christian will close out regular season play on the road at New Mexico Highlands with a doubleheader on April 29 with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
