GRAND JUNCTION,CO- The Cougars needed just one more win on Saturday to take home their first RMAC title in program history. They faced off against MSU Denver for the second straight day, and the offense took care of business as they became champions with a 9-5 victory over the Roadrunners on a historic day for the team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colorado Christian knew what they needed to do from the start, and with the title in mind they jumped ahead with an RBI double from Sydney Reamer that scored Taylor Olsen. Logan Menzies stretched the lead in the second with a solo blast to make it 2-0.
Kenzie Middleton kept the scoring going with a double, and Sami Edwards stepped up and slammed a two-run homer as the lead stood at 5-0 after two. Reamer picked up her second RBI of the game with a single in the fifth as it was beginning to look like the game was out of hand.
The Roadrunners refused to go down without a fight, though, breaking through in the top half of the sixth with five runs to completely change the complexion of the game and cut the Cougars lead to 6-5. Looking for some insurance in the sixth, Colorado Christian did exactly what they needed to.
Miki Berg doubled home a run to push the lead to two, and Edwards smacked a two-run single to stretch the lead to 9-5 heading to the seventh. Alexis Hamilton closed out the title for her team, allowing no runs in the final frame as the Cougars streamed onto the field to celebrate their first RMAC title in program history.
Abrie Castillo picked up the win with five innings of work as she helped her team to the perfect weekend.
After a five RBI tournament, Sami Edwards was named the MVP of the RMAC Championships. The Cougars added four more to the All-Tournament Team as pitchers Alexis Hamilton and Abrie Castillo were awarded with the distinction. Kenzie Middleton and Logan Menzies also made the all-tournament team as the Cougars storybook season continues.
UP NEXT- With the conference title, Colorado Christian earns a spot in the South Central Regional that will take place May 10-12 at the highest seed in the region, The host is to be determined for the regional.
