GUNNISON, CO- Colorado Christian faced a familiar foe in Western Colorado on Saturday night. Just as they did at the Oredigger Classic earlier this year, the Cougars swept the Mountaineers to improve to 2-0 in RMAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED- The two teams battled to start set one, but Libby Goodman put down a kill for a 13-10 lead. They continued to stretch the lead with a kill from Savannah Overson as they stretched the lead to 18-12. After a long run from Western Colorado, Colorado Christian closed the set with five straight points for the 25-18 win.
Alli Douglass got her team started early in set two with a kill for the 5-2 advantage. Lilly Woods put down consecutive kills as the lead stretched to 10-5 thanks to the effort from the middle hitter. A Mountaineers run closed the gap, but Izzy Jones pushed the score to 20-17 with a kill. Kills by Woods and Renee Phillips made it set point and Goodman put it away as the Cougars took the set 25-22.Â
Pushing for the sweep, Colorado Christian started strong with a kill from Goodman for an 11-7 lead. The Mountaineers kept things close though, tying things at 23 apiece late. Facing set point at 24-25, the Cougars locked in as Phillips put down back-to-back kills and an error gave Colorado Christian the match with a 27-25 set win.Â
