Colorado Christian prepared for battle as they welcomed Adams State University into the CCU Event Center on Friday January 13
th. The Grizzlies came into town with an impressive 10-5 overall record.
Â
Both teams got off to a torrid start as they were hitting everything from the floor to begin the game. CCU took the early advantage as they took a 20-19 lead after the first quarter thanks in part to their work on the offensive boards. The Cougs grabbed four offensive rebounds compared to just one on the Adams State side.
Maggie Phipps led all scorers with six points early on as she connected twice from downtown to help give the Cougars the advantage heading into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, the back and forth battle continued as the two teams fought for position within this RMAC contest. Angelline Nageak led the Grizzlies in the first half as she tallied nine points on 4-6 shooting from the floor. The Cougars were led by
Maggie Phipps who scored nine points in the first half to lead CCU to a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Â
Dasiya Jones heated up in the third quarter as she pushed the CCU lead to 60-52 after three quarters of play leading CCU with 13 points in the game. The Cougars outscored the Grizzlies 23-18 in the third quarter after shooting 8-12 from the floor in the quarter.
Â
The fourth quarter continued to put the two teams at odds, but the Cougars were trying to hold off Adams State from completing the comeback to take the conference victory. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies had a great fourth quarter as they had a tremendous quarter as they shot over 55% from the field compared to just 25% from CCU. A last second shot was put up from Adams State Sharmayne Finley which found the bottom of the net and gave the Grizzlies the lead 75-73. The Cougars tried a last second effort, but it was unfruitful as the attempt fell short which gave Adams State the two point victory.
Â
Maggie Phipps led the Cougars as she tallied 22 points while also grabbing five rebounds.
Dasiya Jones was also a leader for the team in the game as she shot 7-7 from the floor to score 16 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Makenna Bodette nearly finished with a double-double as she finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Â
Â
With the result, the Cougars are now 6-10 overall and will set their sights on another conference matchup tomorrow night as they face off against Fort Lewis University at the CCU Event Center. They will take on Fort Lewis starting on Saturday 1/14/2023 with tip scheduled for 5PM MST. Â Â Â Â
