GOLDEN, CO- The Cougars headed to nearby Mines as they took on the Orediggers in a non-conference pod game on Thursday. In the end, the hosts prevailed in a sweep on their home court.
The offense was clicking early as Abby Breeding and Connelly Kilgore put down kills to give CCU a 7-6 lead. However, the Orediggers went on several long runs, and at 19-15 they went on a six-point streak to close the set out 25-15.
The second set was very competitive, and a Renne Phillips kill and Kilgore ace made it 9-6 quickly. The two teams battled back and forth, and Libby Goodman put a ball down for a 21-20 lead late in the set. Kilgore tied it at 23 apiece, but the next two points were won by Mines for a 25-23 set win.
After CSM took a quick lead to start the set, CCU showed resiliency as they clawed their way back to 11-11 on a Janelle Deboer kill. Goodman later drew her team within two with a kill to make it 19-17. However, a late five-point run from the Orediggers gave them the set and the match 25-18 at Lockridge Arena.
Goodman paced the offense with 12 kills, while Phillips tallied seven. Krista Traynor tallied 30 assists, and Deboer picked up three blocks on the night.
The Cougars will be back in action at Lockridge Arena in Golden on October 27 as they take on CSU Pueblo at 6 p.m. MST.
