Cougars Downed by Mountaineers in Gunnison in Close Battle

GUNNISON, CO- Colorado Christian headed to Gunnison on Sunday afternoon as they took on Western Colorado in their second to last game of the season. The hosts netted the first two goals of the game, and a late goal for CCU was not enough in a 2-1 defeat.

The offense got some pressure early as Ava Dinverno got off an early shot. Dinverno forced a save a few moments later as the teams still stood level. Alana Lopp picked up a save before Capri Dewing forced the WCU keeper to make a stop. In the 23rd minute, the Mountaineers broke through for a goal as they started to put a lot of shots on goal. Lopp made four more saves in the half as the teams headed to halftime with the hosts up 1-0.

Western Colorado pressured and struck again in the 74th minute as they grew their lead to 2-0. Four minutes later, Alaina Kregel took a long pass over the top and slotted it to a streaking Dewing who put it past the keeper for a goal. Jessica Sims took a shot in the 81st that missed left, and Dewing got off the last shot of the game in the 88th but could not connect as her shot sailed high. In the end, the Mountaineers came away with a 2-1 victory.

Colorado Christian will close their season on November 1 at MSU Denver with kickoff set for 5 p.m. MST.
