Cougars Fall to Chadron State in Nebraska

CHADRON, NE- Colorado Christian hit the road for an RMAC matchup at Chadron State on wednesday night. Despite a strong fight from the Cougars, it was the host Eagles that came away with a 3-1 victory in their home arena.

The first set was one of many runs, but unfortunately CSC went on more than CCU in the opening set. With the set level at seven, a four-point run swung the momentum in favor of the Eagles and they pulled away to claim a 25-14 set win.

Renee Phillips got off to a hot start in set two, picking up kills early and often in the set. Despite five Phillips kills in the set, a long seven-point run from Chadron State midway through the set gave them control as they claimed a victory 25-13.

The Cougars were determined to extend the match, and Connelly Kilgore and Janelle Deboer got the offense started nicely with a pair of kills early. Libby Goodman broke an 11-11 tie with a kill, and later an Alli Douglass ace pushed the advantage to 17-14. The end of the set was thrilling as the teams battled from 20-20. A Phillips kill and Abby Breeding ace made the gap two, and Goodman ultimately finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 set win.

Goodman and Kilgore put the Cougars up 6-2 quickly with consecutive kills, but the Eagles slowly clawed their way back into things with a run to tie things at 11. They then went on a six-point run to take momentum of the set at 17-12. Douglass and Phillips fought to get their team back into the set with late kills, but in the end the Eagles held on for a 25-19 set win to claim the match 3-1.

Phillips paced the offense with 13 kills, while Goodman chipped in 12 followed by Kilgore with seven. Krista Traynor dished out 34 assists, and Savannah Overson tallied 14 digs. Deboer registered six blocks as she had a strong night at the net.

The Cougars remain on the road as they now head to South Dakota Mines for a November 3 matchup in Rapid City at 6 p.m. MST.
