CCU Down Langston for Second Straight Victory

PUEBLO, CO- The Cougars headed south to take on Langston University on Friday in a neutral site matchup hosted by CSU Pueblo. Led by a strong final few minutes and great overall play, CCU came away with their second consecutive victory by a final score of 77-73.

Agnes Paul got the offense going early with a trio of early layups, and Jenna Kendall later drilled a three-pointer to make it 17-11. A late layup from Dasiya Jones pushed the Cougars ahead 22-13 heading to the second quarter.

Maggie Hutka hit a jumper to get the offense started in the second quarter, and a Regan LoConte basket made it 30-27 with a little under five to go till half. Hutka hit a late three to tighten things as the Lions held a 37-36 halftime lead.

Langston jumped ahead by nine early in the third quarter, but CCU showed resilience to get back into things. Consecutive layups from Nicole Bowlin edged her team closer, and later a LoConte three brought the game within three. The Lions held a slight 57-54 advantage as the teams headed to the final quarter of play.

The fourth was a great quarter for the Cougars as Victoria Perez came out and nailed one from beyond the arc to draw CCU within one. The team stayed in striking distance throughout the quarter before LoConte leveled the game at 70 with a three with 2:09 to play. Hutka made a layup to tie things at 72 and then the define clamped down. A free throw put the Lions ahead 73-72 with 1:19 to play, and that was the last points Langston would score. Hutka drew a foul shooting a three and buried all three free throws for the lead. A defensive stop and pair of free throws from Jones iced the game as the Cougars bided their time and struck when it counted for the 77-73 victory over the Lions.

Hutka continued her torrid start to the season as she paced the offense with 25 points. Jones recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Bowlin dished out five assists to go along with eight points.

Riding two straight victories, CCU returns to Denver for another neutral site matchup on November 20 against Colorado Mesa at Auraria Event Center at 12 p.m. MST.
