Cougars Fight Hard in Loss to Colorado Mesa

DENVER, CO- Colorado Christian headed to the nearby Auraria Event Center in Denver for a neutral site matchup at MSU Denver's arena against Colorado Mesa on Monday. After a fast start, the Cougars could not quite manage to keep up with the hot shooting Mavericks in an eventual 77-61 defeat.

Dasiya Jones and Regan LoConte got the first four points of the game on the board with a pair of layups, and Agnes Paul stretched the lead to 9-2 early with a three-point play. Maggie Phipps knocked down a shot from beyond the perimeter as the first quarter proved to be a successful shooting one for the Cougars. CMU clawed their way back, and the Mavericks led 24-19 heading to quarter number two.

The defenses clamped down in the second period, making a plethora of stops on each end. Phipps and Paul brought their team back within five with a pair of baskets, but a late Mavericks jumper sent the teams to the half with a 43-31 CMU advantage.

LoConte came out of the half and buried a three-pointer to cut into the deficit, and a Phipps layup quickly made it just a seven point Mesa lead. The Mavericks struck back, but Maggie Hutka kept her team within striking distance down nine with a three. However, CMU closed the quarter strong to take a 16 point lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was very low scoring, as the teams remained even with just eight points scored by each team as the game ended with a final score of 77-61.

Phipps led offensively with 13 points, while Hutka tallied 11 followed by Nicole Bowlin and Jones with 10 apiece. On the boards, Jones led with six rebounds while Hutka had four.

The Cougars will look to get back on track at home on November 24 as they host Seattle Pacific University with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. MST.
