Cougars Run-Rule UCCS Twice on Dominant Day

LAKEWOOD,CO- CCU took on conference foe UCCS  in a doubleheader on a cold day in Colorado. The bats were not cold for Colorado Christian, as they raced away for a pair of run-rule victories over the Mountain Lions.

GAME ONE
UCCS struck first in game one, smacking a double to go ahead 1-0. That would turn out to be the only hit of the day for the Mountain Lions, and all the offense they could muster. The Cougars went to work early, as Logan Menzies slammed a two-run homer for her team leading 22nd RBI. Another run came in the second on a Sami Edwards sac fly, and Savannah Tourville replicated that with a sac fly of her own to make it 4-1. The fourth inning put things out of reach, as Taylor Olsen cranked a no-doubter over the fence for two more runs on the board. A Leah Garci sac fly set up CCU to end things in the fifth, and they did thanks to a flurry of UCCS errors. Mikayla Oaks came around to score on an error, and then Kenzie Middleton ended things when she came around to score on another error to close out the 9-1 victory.

Kali Crandal dazzled in the circle, allowing a single hit and striking out five on her way to win number eight on the year. Menzies and Olsen continued to rake, hitting a pair of tw-run shots to pace the offense.

GAME TWO
Olsen stayed hot in the second contest of the day, ripping an early single for an RBI in the first. A solo homer in the third from the visitors made things interesting, but CCU had no plans of this being a close game. Miki Berg provided the response in the bottom half of the inning, notching a two RBI triple down the field line to make it 3-1. Garcia then singled home Berg, followed by a Kayla Middleton single to score Garcia. Middleton then came around to score on an error and Tourville scored on a Kenzie Middleton sac fly. Another error led to an 8-1 Cougars lead heading to the fifth. Kenzie Middleton decided it was time to go home in the fifth, leading off the inning with a solo blast to give her team the walkoff run-rule win by the same score as the previous game, 9-1.

Reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week Abrie Castillo was locked in all day, twirling a six strikeout game with just a single walk issued and one run allowed for her sixth win on the year. Middleton and Berg each notched a pair of RBI to lead the charge offensively.

The Cougars will look for the sweep as they take on UCCS in another Doubleheader on March 5 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST at All Star Park.
