DENVER, CO- Taking on their toughest RMAC opponent to date in MSU Denver on Saturday, the Cougars left no doubt who the better team was. A pair of dominant victories and a record setting smash sent Colorado Christian to nine straight wins and a 33-1 conference record.
GAME ONE
Knowing they had to play clean softball to secure a win against a solid Roadrunners team, the Cougars showed just how good they were. The scoring began with a Taylor Olsen RBI double, and she came around to score on a passed ball to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Kayla Middleton blasted a solo shot for a three run lead. Not to be outdone by her sister, Kenzie Middleton launched a solo shot of her own in the seventh. The blast from Kenzie gave her the all-time home run record at Colorado Christian as she slammed the 40th long ball of her outstanding career as a Cougar. An MSUD Denver gave CCU the insurance needed for a 5-0 shutout victory.
Kali Crandall was excellent all game, facing two more batters than the minimum in seven innings. One hit and one walk led to a dominant outing for Crandall, while the Middleton's provided the power in a strong game one victory.
GAME TWO
The bats came alive in the second contest, as Olsen got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the first. A single Roadrunner scored in their half of the first, but Leah Garcia doubled home two more in the third for a 4-1 lead. MSUD threatened again with a two-run blast, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the game.
Kenzie Middleton hit her second homer of the day in the fourth, and Miki Berg doubled home another run. Savannah Tourville then doubled home two more runs to stretch the lead to 8-3. A costly MSUD error scored two more runs to make it a 10-3 lead on a six run inning. A single run in the fourth scored for the hosts, then Kayla Middleton absolutely torched a ball over the right field wall for her second blast of the day and to extend the lead to 12-4. Three more outs gave CCU the run-rule victory after six innings as they made a statement on day one of competition at Metro.
Abrie Castillo snagged another win on 3.2 innings pitched, while Crandall entered in and pitched 2.1 innings to close out the victory. Leah Garcia powered the offense with three RBI in the game.
The Cougars close play at MSUD on April 16 with a doubleheader slated for 12 and 2 p.m. MST.
