GRAND JUNCTION, CO- For the second time this season, a rare pitching feat has been accomplished by the Cougars. Kali Crandall saw her teammate Abrie Castillo throw a perfect game earlier this season, and she came through with a perfect game of her own against the top offense in the RMAC as CCU swept Colorado Mesa to win the series 3-1.
GAME ONE
The offense showed up early for CCU, starting with a suicide squeeze bunt from Savannah Tourville to score Kayla Middleton. Miki Berg launched a solo homer in the second over the left field fence, and from there the offense took off. Sami Edwards notched two RBI with a single in the fourth before Kayla Middleton doubled home the fifth run of the game for her team.
The fifth inning saw an absolute explosion from the Cougars, beginning with a Berg single that saw two runs come around to score. Logan Menzies then singled home another run, and Camryn Quilling smacked a double to center field to make it 9-0. The finishing touches were made by the Middletons, starting with a two-run homer from Kayla Middleton. Kenzie Middleton then slammed a solo shot to left field as the visitors closed out a 12-0 victory.
Crandall was untouchable, facing just 15 batters with 8 strikeouts. She threw just 54 pitches, totaling half the 108 the Mavericks threw. Kali induced 5 groundouts and 2 flyouts as she recorded just the second perfect game in CCU history, with both coming this season. Kayla Middleton powered the offense with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
GAME TWO
From the start, things appeared as if they would be closer in the second contest of the day. Tourville started things off with an RBI double, but a solo homer from CMU tied things up after the first inning. Menzies answered back with an RBI single, scoring two on an error from the Mavs. A Quilling single made it 4-1 after two innings. They extended the lead further as Edwadrs blasted a two-run blast to right field. Mikayla Oaks entered as a pinch hitter and quickly made her impact felt in the sixth, ripping a solo home run as CCU took a 7-1 lead. The Cougars finished strong from there, shutting down the hosts in a 7-1 victory to win the series 3-1.
Abrie Castillo registered win number 18 on the year, pitching the complete game with 5 strikeouts and just one run allowed. Edwards led the offense with 2 RBI in a balanced hitting effort from the Cougars.
Colorado Christian will return home for the regular series finale against Fort Lewis, beginning on APril 28 at 12 p.m. MST.
