GOLDEN, CO – Finishing off their conference opening weekend, the Cougars took on Colorado School of Mines on Saturday in Golden. After a tough fought match to the end, the Orediggers took the win in an exciting five sets.
The first set of the match started with the Orediggers taking a couple of offensive runs to set them apart to the end, hitting their best set of the match with a .467 percentage to win 25-17. Set two however was run entirely by the Cougars – with a .409 hitting percentage and 14-point win. CCU had and early 5-point run to get ahead, then followed with mini runs as they scored multiple points at almost every side-out, only having three single-point possessions. The final score of set two was 25-11, tying up the match at 1-1.
Set three was a battle between the two teams, seeing lead changes and momentum shifts left and right. The Cougars and Orediggers were tied up at 18s before Colorado School of Mines took the lead, then chipped away to win 25-23. With the pressure on and both teams trading big kills, the two found themselves tied up again at the end of the set at 17s in the fourth. The Cougars outscored the Orediggers 8-2 to close it out, with 6 kills coming from
Renee Phillips,
Libby Goodman, and
Izzy Jones at 2 a-piece to take the match to a fifth and final set. Despite the strong efforts and comebacks, the Cougars fell in the fifth with a final score of 15-8. The Orediggers capitalized on unforced errors to seal the victory.
Leading the Cougars offensively was
Libby Goodman, who finished with 16 kills and a .424 hitting percentage.
Renee Phillips was a force at the net, tallying 14 kills, a .542 hitting percentage, and 4 blocks.
Izzy Jones was stellar running the offense, dishing out 45 assists, 5 kills, and 4 aces on the night. Leading the defense was
Jessamyn Rose, who had 21 digs.
The loss puts Colorado Christian at 4-6 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play. The team will have their home opener weekend for their next pair of matches, hosting Fort Lewis on Friday, September 22
nd, followed by Western Colorado on Saturday the 23
rd.
