Cougars Win Second Straight with Sweep at Adams State

ALAMOSA, CO- Colorado Christian hit the road on Friday for an evening matchup at Adams State, strong play throughout led to a sweep of the Grizzlies as CCU improved their record in conference play to a stellar 5-2. 

After facing an early deficit, the Cougars quickly righted the ship with a trio of kills from Abby Newell, Lilly Woods and Megan McNitt. The Grizzlies played tough and hung around throughout much of the first set, but Renee Phillips slammed one home to jumpstart a three point run for a 20-17 advantage. Woods and Newell put down kills to bring CCU to set point, and Woods finished things with a slam to give her team the 25-21 set victory. 

Trailing 9-8 early in set two, CCU got a kill from Phillips and a pair of attack errors to take the lead 11-9. McNitt later pushed the lead to 18-15 as the end of the set approached, but Adams State would not go down without a fight. Trailing 24-20, the Grizzlies staved off three straight set points, but the fourth at 24-23 was closed with a Newell kill for the two set advantage for CCU. 

With a sweep in sight, Suzanna Conner and McNitt put down kills for the 7-3 lead early, and the visitors continued to gain control with a block from Izzy Jones and Phillips to make it 14-8. A four point run late in the set made it 21-14, and Jones tallied a late kill as CCU closed out the hard fought match with a 25-21 win in set three for the sweep. 

Newell and Phillips paced the offense with 10 kills apiece followed by Woods with nine. Jones dished out 36 assists and tied for the team high in digs with Kristina House with 11. Shelby Hernandez tallied 10 digs while Woods notched five blocks followed by Phillips with four. 

Colorado Christian continue play in a pivotal matchup at CSU Pueblo on October 19 at 6 p.m. MST.
