SALT LAKE CITY, UT- Colorado Christian continued their four-game stretch of games on the road with game three at Westminster on Friday. After the home team comfortably took set one, CCU responded by winning the next three sets for a crucial victory in RMAC play.
The Griffins got off to a hot start in set one, taking the first four points.
Abby Newell and
Krista Traynor picked up kills for the first few points of the match for the Cougars, while
Megan McNitt and
Renee Phillips later put down kills as the deficit stood at 13-6. The hosts poured it on from there, surging to a 25-13 set win.
Janelle DeBoer tallied a kill to send the Cougars ahead 4-3.
Brooklin Frazier notched an ace as the lead grew to 13-8. Newell put down a pair of kills to give her team a 22-17 lead, and CCU went on to claim the set off of a Traynor kill 25-18.
The third set was a pivotal one for momentum as the teams battled to take the 2-1 advantage. DeBoer picked up a solo block for the 6-3 lead.
Suzanna Conner slammed home a kill, and a Newell kill made it 21-19 late in the set. After McNitt tied the set at 24 with a kill, the Cougars faced set point at 25-24. CCU buckled down from there, as Conner tied it with a kill.
Shelby Hernandez then came up huge as she stepped up to the service line and delivered consecutive aces at the best possible time for the 27-25 victory.
McNitt gave her team the first point of the fourth set, and DeBoer continued a strong night at the net with a block. The Griffins went on a run from there, taking control as they jumped out to a 13-8 lead, but CCU hung around and kept things close as a kill from Traynor made it 17-15. Eventually the teams battled as Westminster looked poised to take the set and force a fifth as they led 24-21. Just like the third set, the COugars showed grit and resilience as they refused to let the set slip away. Newell and Conner put down kills as they brought their team within one, and after a bad set from the Griffins the teams stood tied at 24 apiece. Traynor put down a massive kill to set up match point, and Newell capped the impressive five-point run to close the match with a kill as the visitors stormed back for the 26-24 win to take the match in four sets.
McNitt paced the offense with 15 kills, while Traynor and Newell put down 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Izzy Jones dished out 22 assists followed by Traynor with 15. Hernandez led the backline with 23 digs while Traynor and Frazier tallied 10 apiece. DeBoer made a number of impact plays as she tallied four blocks to lead her team in that category.
The Cougars return to Colorado tomorrow as they take on #17 Colorado Mesa on October 26 at 4 p.m. MST.
