LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars returned for a three game home slate to close out their season as they take on Fort Lewis College on Friday afternoon. Two first half goals for CCU helped them secure a huge win 2-0 and improve their winning streak to three games.
Â
The match started with the visitors getting two shots off towards goal, but both shots came off the woodwork and stayed out of goal.
Jessie Sims would have a nice attempt at goal, but a comfortable save would be made by Fort Lewis. In the 23rd minute
Capri Dewing won the ball and took a wonderful strike in the upper corner, with a bit of help with the crossbar the ball found its way in the back of the net to give CCU the 1-0 lead. The Skyhawks would keep the pressure going taking more shots at goal, but
Alana Lopp was stellar in between the sticks for CCU making three saves in the first half.
Justine Moreau had a great attempt at goal that was saved which would give the Cougars a corner and momentum. Moments later
Hannah Mares helped send a pass to
Ireland Jeffrey who took a shot and a deflection to get her first career goal at CCU and give the hosts the 2-0 lead. Halftime would approach with the Cougars leading after a great first half performance.
Â
The Cougars started the second half on the front foot winning three corners and taking multiple chances at goal, all would be cleared away. Fort Lewis kept attacking with chances, but Lopp read every shot she faced and kept her chance at a clean sheet alive. A pair of shots from Moreau and Mares for CCU would just miss their target at goal. The game would start to get a little physical between both teams as the fouls started to build up. As the second half went by quickly, the ref blew the final whistle with the Cougars coming out on top 2-0.
Â
The Cougars managed to get 14 shots overall in the match, seven of them were on goal.
