LAS VEGAS, NM- CCU closed the regular season on Saturday as they traveled to New Mexico Highlands. In a dominant effort, the Cougars rolled past the Cowgirls in three sets for the sweep. The win earned the Cougars the #6 seed at the upcoming RMAC Tournament.
The Cougars jumped ahead 9-4 early as
Lilly Woods put down a pair of kills and
Suzanna Conner slammed one home. The lead eventually grew to 19-10 off of an
Abby Newell kill, and three straight points to close the set capped by a kill from
Renee Phillips gave the visitors the 25-16 victory.
Set two was a dominant one from CCU as they went on a lengthy ten-point run led by three Newell kills and a block by Newell and Woods for a 17-5 lead.
Megan McNitt got in on the action with a kill, and a pair of kills from Phillips closed the set 25-13.
Newell continued her hot hitting with consecutive kills, and Janelle DeBoer and McNitt tallied a block to push their team ahead 17-10. The set closed with five straight points from the Cougars as McNitt and Woods put down kills as CCU claimed the sweep with a 25-12 final set victory.
Newell led the offense with 12 kills followed by seven apiece from Woods and Conner.
Izzy Jones dished out 34 assists while
Shelby Hernandez picked up 18 digs.
With a spot in the RMAC Tournament secured, CCU will head to Rapid City to take on the #3 seeded Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines with first serve slated for 7 p.m. MST on November 19.
