DENVER, CO- The Cougars played in the RMAC Championship game for the first time in program history on Saturday as they took on the host and #1 seed MSU Denver. The Roadrunners proved too much on this day as CCU finished as RMAC Tournament Runner Ups after a sweep from MSUD.
The Roadrunners jumped ahead early and never looked back in set number one. Building a 16-6 lead, MSUD staved off a few kills from
Lilly Woods as they claimed the opening set 25-12.
MSU Denver was hot to start set two as well as the Cougars fought to level the match.
Connelly Kilgore picked up a kill to bring her team within 10-5, and Woods and Kilgore later put down kills for their team. In the end, the Roadrunners claimed a 25-13 set win.
Colorado Christian showed a lot of fight in set three as
Abby Newell and
Renee Phillips put down kills for an early 7-6 lead.
Savannah Overson tallied an ace to put her team up 10-9, and
Suzanna Conner registered a pair of kills as CCU led 14-13. With the set tied at 15 apiece, MSUD went on a crucial five-point run that put them in control. Despite kills from
Megan McNitt and Conner and an ace from McNitt, CCU found themselves at match point at 24-19 and ended up falling 25-19 as MSU Denver celebrated their second RMAC Tournament Title in three years.
Phillips paced her team with eight kills followed by Woods with six and Newell with four.
Izzy Jones had 26 assists while
Shelby Hernandez picked up nine digs. At the conclusion of the tournament, Jones and Newell each earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the past three games.
With a pair of wins against Regionally ranked opponents on their way to the RMAC Championship game, the Cougars appear poised to make a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament for only the second time in program history.
