LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars celebrated their seniors on Saturday as they took on Black Hills State at the CCU Event Center. In a dominant display, the home team came away with a convincing sweep for another RMAC win.
Megan McNitt and
Lilly Woods set the tone with a block on point one of the game, and a
Renee Phillips kill and
Suzanna Conner ace sent CCU ahead 5-2. An eight point run midway through the set put the hosts firmly in control as Phillips notched a pair of aces and
Abby Newell put down two kills. Phillips and
Izzy Jones notched a block and a Phillips kill ended the set 25-10.
Set two was closer, but the better team was clearly the Cougars throughout. A
Savannah Overson ace and Newell kill made it 20-16, and they once again closed the set with five straight points capped by a crucial lock from Woods and mcNitt for a 25-17 set win.
The Yellowjackets put up a good fight in set number three, staying close the entire set. WIth a 4-2 lead for BHSU, Newell and Phillips matched a block and Newell slammed home a kill. The teams battled back and forth as they eventually stood at 20-20. Conner and Phillips got their team to match point at 24-21, and Conner closed the match with a kill for a 25-23 victory for the sweep.
Newell had a 10 kill night, followed by Phillips with nine and Conner with eight. Jones dished out 35 assists and
Shelby Hernandez notched 12 digs followed by Overson with 11. Woods was dominant with nine blocks on the night.
CCU closes their home regular season schedule on November 13 as they host Chadron State at 6 p.m. MST.
