GRAND JUNCTION, CO- CCU closed their road trip with a matchup at Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks pulled away with a pair of big quarters to take down the Cougars 78-55.
Maggie Phipps got the offense going with a jumper, but CMU went on a long run from there as they took a commanding 20-5 lead after one quarter.
Josie Grosdidier sparked the scoring in the second with an early jumper, and
Hayley Luther drilled a three-pointer.
Elise Grosdidier hit a jumper while
Mia Guest connected from downtown as the score stood at 30-15. A layup from
Victoria Perez and three from
Nicole Bowlin sent the two teams to the break with the hosts leading 36-20.
The Cougars began to make a comeback in the third quarter as Bowlin and
Elise Grosdidier connected from beyond the arc, a jumper from Luther cut the deficit to 46-37. Perez hit a jumper as the game tightened even more at 52-44, and the teams went to the final frame with CMU leading by just nine at 55-46.
Phipps kept her team close with a jumper, but from there the Mavericks began to pull away and take control of the game. A Perez three late in the game was not enough as CMU eventually claimed the victory 78-55.
Bowlin led the offense with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Luther tacked on double digits with 10 points and four rebounds, and Perez chipped in 8 points and 3 assists.
Elise Grosdidier had 9 points, three rebounds and a steal.
The Cougars will at long last have their home opener on December 12 as they take on South Dakota Mines with tipoff set for 6 p.m. MST.
