LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed their five-game homestand with a doubleheader against St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon. CCU rolled from start to finish, led by a two-homer game in game two from Leah Garcia as the home team swept the Hilltoppers with wins by the score of 5-0 and 9-1.
GAME ONEÂ
The scoring started early for Colorado Christian in the first contest as Samaria Roope smacked an RBI single to score Kenzie Middleton. The runs continued the next inning as Logan Menzies came home on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Garcia scored on a fielder's choice the next inning, and she picked up an RBI single the next inning to score Sami Edwards. The final run came in the fourth as Kaila Eastburn notched an RBI single to send the game to the final score of 5-0.Â
Emma Duncan continued her red hot start to the season, pitching a complete game shutout to keep her ERA at 0.00 through five games. A balanced offensive effort saw four players tally RBIs as CCU shut down St. Edward's.Â
GAME TWO
The scoring started even quicker in the second game, as Kenzie Middleton homered from the leadoff position for a lightning fast 1-0 lead. Garcia joined the home run party in the second, launching a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead. Eastburn then deposited a solo homer over the center field fence as the ball was flying around the yard.Â
A run in the fourth from SEU did not stop the momentum of the Cougars as Garcia notched a multi-homer game with another two-run bomb in the fourth. With the score sitting at 6-1, an eastburn double and Camryn Quilling sacrifice fly sent the lead to 8-1. Heading to the fifth, just one run was needed for a run-rule victory, and after quickly loading the bases, Edwards ended things with an RBI single through the right side to end things early 9-1.Â
Eastburn picked up the complete game victory with just two hits allowed and four strikeouts. Garcia had a monster game, sending two balls over the fence for four RBI to put her stamp on the dominant victory.Â
With the pair of wins today, CCU now sits at 8-1 overall as they close pre-conference play. They will now begin RMAC play at Adams State with a doubleheader on February 17 with first pitch at 12 p.m. MST.
