AMERICUS, GA- The Cougars closed their series at Georgia Southwestern State on Sunday with a morning matchup. The offense found some serious life in the final two innings as CCU scored 10 over the last two, but the Hurricanes tallied a pair in the ninth to walk it off 11-10.
The home team got their offense going early, scoring three runs in the first two innings. They tacked on five more in the fifth, sixth and seventh to take an 8-0 lead heading to the eighth, but CCU refused to roll over despite the large deficit.
The eighth inning started the rally, as Gavin Acosta doubled to score Landry Hamm. Acosta advanced on a groundout and came home to score on a wild pitch to make it 8-2. GSWSU scored a run in the ninth, and it appeared a miracle would need to happen to keep the Cougars alive.
The offense used the momentum from the eighth in the ninth as Tucker Willingham started with a double and Major Maydon walked. A Hamm single loaded the bases before Acosta singled home the teams' third run. Kade Carney singled in another, and a Caden Walton walk and two-RBI single from Cole Douglass tightened the score to 9-7. With two runners on base, Luke Thompson uncorked a massive three-run homer as the improbable comeback sent CCU ahead 10-9. The home team needed to score in the ninth to tie or win, and unfortunately they were able to tally a pair for the walkoff victory 11-10.
Thompson led the offense with three RBI, while Acosta had two for his team. Douglass added a pair of RBI as well in the furious rally from the Cougars.
Colorado Christian now returns to their home state to take on CSU Pueblo in a non-conference series, with game one on the road in Pueblo at 3 p.m. MST.
