LAKEWOOD, CO - The Colorado Christian University Cougars hosted a non-conference home opener against CSU Pueblo on Saturday afternoon, and after an exciting game fell with a final score of 19-12.
The first inning started strong for the Cougars, with a quick 3 up 3 down in the top then scoring 2 runs in the bottom.
Kade Carney singled to start it off, then advanced to second after
Gavin Acosta was hit by pitch. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch, and Carney made it home after a single from
Sawyer Shepherd. Acosta was right behind him after a sac fly from
Jonny Tewinkle to make the score 2-0.
The Thunderwolves responded in the second, scoring 4 to take the lead. CCU however scored another pair in the bottom of the inning to tie up the game. With two outs on the board,
Aaron Morgan singled through the left side which advanced
Landry Hamm who had walked. They both advanced again after an error, and both made it home after a single to right center from
Kade Carney.
CSU Pueblo had another 4 run inning to start the 3rd, and the Cougars brought the difference to just 1 run in the bottom of the 4th after they scored 3. Ross Panlasigu walked, then made it home on a triple from
Aaron Morgan.
Kade Carney then homered to score the last 2 runs of the inning, making the score 8-7. However it was not long before Colorado Christian took the lead again, after landing another pair of runs in the bottom of the 5th to go up 9-8.
Sawyer Shepherd started the inning with a single through the right side, then advanced to second after
Caden Walton singled.
Landry Hamm then tripled to bring the two home and take the lead.
The excitement continued as both teams scored 3-a-piece in the 6th inning, keeping the Cougars ahead still by 1 at 12-11.
Sawyer Shepherd doubled to bring home Landry Thompson, then
Jonny Tewinkle walked to put runners on first and second.
Caden Walton then doubled to score the last runs of the game for CCU. The Thunderwolves caught fire and finished strong to seal the victory after landing 3 runs in the 8th and another 5 in the 9th to take the win by 7.
It was a well fought game and exciting home-opener for the Cougars, and the team will be back on against the Thunderwolves tomorrow in Pueblo at 2pm.
