LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU wrapped their four-game set against Mines on Sunday with a doubleheader. It was all Cougars in game one as they rolled to an 8-0 run-rule victory in six innings, but the Oredoggers dug deep for a 2-0 victory in the second contest to earn a series split.
GAME ONE
Colorado Christian used the long ball to great effect in the first contest of the day, starting with a two-run homer from
Logan Menzies in the second.
Kenzie Middleton followed moments later with a solo shot to left field, and
Kaila Eastburn launched a solo home run in the third for a 4-0 lead.
A bases-loaded walk drawn by
Camryn Quilling to score
Leah Garcia made it 5-0, and a wild pitch allowed
Samaria Roope to make it home for a 6-0 advantage. Needing two more runs to run-rule the Orediggers, Garcia got a hold of a pitch and watched it fly over the left field fence for a two-run blast as the Cougars won 8-0 in six innings.
Hanna Espinoza dazzled in the circle, posting a shutout in her first collegiate start with just three hits allowed and a strikeout for the win. Menzies and Garcia paced the offense with their two-run homers.
GAME TWO
The second contest was a battle to the end, and Mines got on the board first with a solo homer from Sydney Wilson in the third. They tacked on another run in the fifth on a single to take a 2-0 advantage.
The offense had their opportunities, putting 7 runners on base on 4 hits, but they could not manage to push any across the plate as the visitors held on for a 2-0 victory.
Eastburn had a strong day in the circle, throwing the complete seven innings with six strikeouts and just a pair of runs allowed.
After two straight home series, the Cougars will hit the road for a weekend series at UCCS, with first pitch on March 15 set for 12 p.m. MST.
