PUEBLO, CO- The Cougars took on UCCS in Pueblo on Sunday in a doubleheader moved from Colorado Springs due to heavy snow in the area this weekend. CCU made themselves right at home on the neutral field, shutting down the Mountain Lions for a pair of dominant victories 7-0 and 9-0.
GAME ONE
The First contest began as a pitching duel and remained that way for a majority of the contest.
Hanna Espinoza and the Mountain Lions' Autumn Kunze battled for five innings without allowing a run before the Cougars offense got going.
The first run of the game crossed the plate when
Leah Garcia took advantage of a wild pitch and raced home for the 1-0 lead.
Camryn Quilling nabbed an RBI with a groundout as the fifth inning came to a close with CCU leading 2-0. Garcia started the seventh with a solo homer, and with the bases loaded, Kaila Easburn smacked a bases clearing double as the lead ballooned to 6-0. One more double from
Samaria Roope put the finishing touches on a 7-0 victory.
Espinoza dazzled in the circle yet again, throwing six innings with no runs allowed and four strikeouts.
Rawnie Weststrate finished the game with a two strikeout seventh to close out the win. Easburn led the offense with three RBI.
GAME TWO
The offense got going much earlier in game two, starting with an RBI double from
Kenzie Middleton in the first. Eastburn followed with a double of her own to make it 2-0 quickly. The next inning,
Kayla Middleton continued the double party with an RBI knock, and
Sami Edwards brought her home with a double of herself for a 4-0 lead.
The two-base hits continued to come as
Logan Menzies picked up an RBI double, and Edwards notched another RBI with a sac fly in the fourth. Kenzie came around to score on a wild pitch that same inning, and
Cheyenne Stark tripled home a run in the fifth to make it 8-0. One last run came across from a Kayla sac fly to achieve the final score of 9-0.
Eastburn did something she had never done before, pitching a no-hitter for her team with five innings of work and four strikeouts. It marks the first no-hitter thrown this season by the Cougars, and Kaila dominated all day to achieve the impressive accomplishment.
With a doubleheader sweep in hand, the Cougars will look to make it four in a row when they face off against UCCS on March 18 in Pueblo at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
