CCU Overwhelm Mountain Lions in Pair of Wins

PUEBLO, CO- The Cougars took on UCCS on Monday as they closed their four-game series with their RMAC foe. It was another day of dominance for CCU, as they allowed just one run across both games in a pair of victories 11-1 and 9-0.

GAME ONE
Sami Edwards got the scoring started early in the first contest as she tallied a sac fly to score Kayla Middleton who led off the game with a double. The offense slowed a bit for the next few innings, but Kenzie Middleton provided a jolt with a solo homer in the fourth. Elyse McMullin followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 as the offensive floodgates opened.

Kenzie continued her hot hitting with a two RBI single in the fifth, and then the homers started to stack. A UCCS run in the fifth did not affect the outcome, as McMullin unloaded on a ball for her first collegiate homer, a two-run shot to make it 7-1 in the sixth. The ball continued to fly in the seventh, as Kaila Eastburn slammed a two-run bomb for a 9-1 advantage. One last ball flew over the fence off the bat of Leah Garcia as she uncorked a two-run homer to send her team to a dominant 11-1 victory.

Emma Duncan picked up the win with five innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts, and Rawnie Weststrate closed strong for the final two innings with a strikeout and the minimum of six batters faced.

GAME TWO
The Cougars used some opportunistic base running to plate their first few runs in the first. Kenzie stole second and forced a bad throw to advance to third and Kayla trotted home to score. Kenzie then came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The runs continued as Samaria Roope laid down a bunt and the pitcher made a poor throw as Eastburn and Kenzie scored to make it 4-0.

The onslaught continued as Logan Menzies notched an RBI single, and Garcia later tripled home Menzies in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage. McMullin followed with an RBI double, while Kayla singled home another run. Edwards closed the scoring with a double as the Cougars rolled to a 9-0 run-rule victory.

Hanna Espinoza continued to shine, throwing four scoreless innings to make it 21 straight innings without allowing a run. McMullin closed it out in the final inning to seal the deal on a tremendous weekend.

After a stellar 4-0 series, the Cougars will return to All Star Park to take on CSU Pueblo March 22-23 with first pitch on Friday slated for 12 p.m. MST.
