LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian returned to All Star Park on Thursday for a matchup against UCCS. Led by a six-run first inning, the Cougars rolled their way to a 7-4 victory over the Mountain Lions to claim their first RMAC win.
The visitors got on the board first as a single and double plated a run to make it 1-0. CCU responded in a huge way as they began on fire at the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
Kade Carney continued his excellent consistency with a leadoff single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. After moving to third, Carney came home on a single from
Major Maydon.
The runs continued to come as
Aaron Morgan ripped a triple to left center to score two more runs. Morgan raced home on a passed ball to make it 4-1, and
Jonny Tewinkle then got a hold of a ball and lined it out of the park for a solo homer. Carney came back up to the plate for the second time in the first, and he wasted little time in picking up an RBI with his second single of the frame. Heading into the second inning, the Cougars were on top 6-1.
The pitching settled in from there for both teams as
Chad Naf pitched the first two innings before being relieved by
Saxton Sorenson. Sorenson dazzled, slowing the Mountain Lions down and keeping them off balance. UCCS scored a single run in the third, but neither team could tally any more runs till the seventh.
Caden Walton crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh as a wild pitch allowed him to come home. The visitors managed to score a pair in the ninth, but the Cougars held on for a big victory by a final score of 7-4.
Sorenson picked up the victory with 6.1 innings pitched and just three runs allowed. Naf put in a good two innings of work, and
Anthony Thomas closed in the ninth for the final two outs. Carney and Morgan paced the offense, going a combined 4-8 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Cougars continue play against UCCS at home on March 29 with a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m. MST.
