Cougars Split Pair at Home vs Mines

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian began their second straight RMAC series at home on Saturday as they faced off against Mines in a doubleheader. A low scoring affair went the way of the visiting Orediggers in game one, but the offense for CCU responded in game two for a 9-4 victory to earn the split.

GAME ONE
The Cougars scored the games' first run in the first contest, as Leah Garcia notched an RBI groundout to score Kenzie Middleton. Mines responded in the second with four runs as they chased Emma Duncan from the game.

Samaria Roope got her team closer with an RBI double in the fourth, and the game tightened in the sixth when Sami Edwards slammed a solo homer to make it 4-3. Hanna Espinoza pitched very well, not allowing a run in her time in the circle, but the Cougars could not rally in the final inning and fell by a final score of 4-3.

Espinoza went five complete innings with 3 strikeouts and just 3 hits allowed with no runs given up. Three different players notched an RBI, but the Oredoggers prevailed just barely by a run.

GAME TWO
The Orediggers struck first in game two, plating a pair of runs in the second inning to take an early lead. An error in the outfield allowed a Cougars run, and Mia Stankiewicz doubled home two more for a 3-2 lead.

Mines tied the game in the third, but CCU responded emphatically in the fifth. Garcia started with a single for the lead, and a passed ball allowed Garcia to score moments later. Logan Menzies broke the game wide open as she uncorked a two-run bomb over the center field fence for the 7-3 lead. Kayla Middleton closed the scoring in the inning with an RBI single for an 8-4 lead.

Mines plated another run in the sixth, but it was answered with a Menzies single as the final score of 9-4 was reached.

Elyse McMullin snagged her first win of the season with 2.2 innings pitched and just one run allowed on two strikeouts. Menzies and Roope were perfect at the plate, going a combined 8-8 with 3 RBI.

The Cougars wrap their four-game series on March 10 against Mines at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST at All Star Park.
