SPEARFISH, SD- Colorado Christian traveled to South Dakota to take on Black Hills State on Saturday in their final roadtrip of the RMAC regular season. After the Cougars hung on in a tight 5-3 victory, the bats came alive in game two for a 12-2 mercy-rule win.
GAME ONE
The Yellowjackets jumped ahead in the second inning 1-0, but CCU had a response. The third inning began with a game tying double from
Kayla Middleton, and
Sami Edwards later gave her team the lead with an RBI single. Black Hills State answered with a game tying double the next inning as the teams grappled for an advantage.
Logan Menzies gave her team the lead back with a solo homer in the fourth, and Kayla sent one over the fence in the fifth for a 4-2 lead. A homer from BHSU tightened the gap, but Kayla made sure they would not go into the final inning with a one run game as she singled in her third runner of the game in the sixth to score to tally the games final in a 5-3 win.
Kaila Eastburn picked up her 14th win of the season with a complete game victory, allowing just two hits while striking out an impressive eight batters. Kayla came a triple away from hitting for the cycle as she drove in runs via a single, double and homer to pace the offense.
GAME TWO
After the hard fought game one, the Cougars made sure the second contest would not be nearly as close.
Kenzie Middleton blasted a two-run homer in the first, and
Leah Garcia followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 after one. Kayla continued her dominance at the plate, picking a sac fly in the second before launching a game changing three-run bomb in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
Garcia notched an RBI groundout moments later, and Menzies singled in another as the lead ballooned to 9-0 after four innings of play. The fifth saw more runs scored for CCU as Edwards notched an RBI groundout followed by a double from Eastburn to plate another and make it 11-0. Eastburn came around to score on an error, and a pair of runs in the bottom of the fight were not enough to stave off the run-rule 12-2 victory for the Cougars.
Emma Duncan picked up the win for her 15th on the season, going four strong innings with a pair of strikeouts. Kayla yet again led her offense from the leadoff position, notching four RBI with two runs scored in the dominant display.
Colorado Christian will close play in Spearfish with a doubleheader on April 21 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST.
