CCU Roll Past Cowboys in Doubleheader Sweep

LAS VEGAS, NM- The Cougars traveled to New Mexico on Friday as they began their final series of the season with a doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands. Led by a potent offense and effective pitching, CCU rolled their way to a pair of wins 20-7 in run-rule fashion and 6-3 in the second contest of the day.

GAME ONE
The offense got going immediately as WIll Brassil blasted a two-run homer to give his team the lead. Major Maydon singled in another run, while Sawyer Shepherd picked up an RBI fielder's choice. Gavin Acosta singled in the fifth run of the inning, while Kade Carney made it 7-0 with another single as the visitors jumped all over the Cowboys pitching.

The second inning was another big one for the Cougars, as Jonny Tewinkle blasted a solo homer. Aaron Morgan tripled home another run, and Shepherd singled in the 10th run for his team. Carney tripled with the bases loaded to score all three as the onslaught continued for a 13-2 lead. Brassil roped the third single of the inning for his team to score another run, and Tewinkle grounded out to score another run for a 15-2 advantage.

Tewinkle blasted his second solo homer of the contest in the fifth, and Morgan immediately followed with a solo blast of his own for a 17-4 lead. Luke Thompson singled home two more runs in the fifth, and a seventh inning groundout ended the scoring for CCU as the visitors ran away with a 20-7 run-rule win.

Jaxon Simmons snagged the win on the mound with four innings pitched and three strikeouts. Carney paced the offense with four RBI, while Brassil and Tewinkle followed with three apiece.

GAME TWO
The two teams remained scoreless until the third inning when Acosta connected on a solo bomb. Thompson and Brassil followed with RBI groundouts, and Carney singled home another for a 4-0 lead.

A Thompson single in the fourth made it 5-0, but New Mexico Highlands rallied for three runs to tighten the gap. Morgan ended the rally as he blasted his second homer in as many games as the Cougars won the second game of the day 6-3.

Chaz Graham picked up the win with a strong three innings pitched, and Cole Kennedy went four strong innings in relief to help his team claim the victory. Thompson led the offense with two RBI to help his team claim the win.

The Cougars close their season May 4 with a doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands at 12 and 3 p.m. MST.
