Strong Effort Leads to Draw with Western Oregon

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars opened their three game homestand on Friday morning at Trailblazer Stadium with a matchup against the Wolves from Western Oregon University. After a scoreless first half and a goal from the penalty spot for CCU the Wolves found the back of the net to earn a hard fought 1-1 draw.

The game started with the Wolves controlling the ball a lot in the first half, but that wouldn't stop junior Cole Foresman getting a shot off but the opposing goalkeeper was ready for it. Western Oregon would go on to get chance after chance with three corners early in the first half and testing the defensive skills for the Cougars. Jai Gillespie made some wonderful saves to keep his side in the game and give himself some confidence. More corners for Western Oregon and lots of possession of the ball, one last corner for CCU that was unsuccessful would take us to halftime scoreless 0-0.

The second half would start once again with Western Oregon applying heavy pressure to CCU forcing Gillespie to make a diving save to his left hand side. The Cougars would start to find their rhythm, as Lucca Casci the Cougars leading goalscorer would get a chance but just put it over the crossbar. Moments later senior Drew Brown got into the action battling for the ball in the 18 yard box and getting fouled as the ref awarded the Cougars with a penalty kick. Brown calmly stepped up to take the kick and put the ball in the bottom right corner of the goal. With CCU holding on to their one goal lead the Wolves would not go down without a good battle. With almost five minutes left in the game they got a pass on the ground to the middle of the box and a shot found its way to get the equalizer for Western Oregon. As the final minutes winded down and both teams fighting to get the win, the ref blew the final whistle as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Cougars got seven shots in the game, four of them were on goal, and Drew Brown added his name to one of five players to score for CCU this season.

Colorado Christian will be back in action at Trailblazer Stadium for a matchup with Saint Martin's University on September 22 at 12:30 p.m. MST.
