Matthew Storer: Paving a Legacy of Excellence & Humility

LAKEWOOD, CO- When Matthew Storer transferred to Colorado Christian from Western Colorado University in 2021, there was a lot of anticipation and excitement around what the Colorado Springs runner would be able to do for the Cougars. Over the past three years, Storer has met and exceeded those expectations, becoming the most decorated athlete in CCU Athletics history.

After having to sit out a year due to his transfer, Storer was ready to go when the 2022 Cross Country season rolled around. Leading up to the Regional meet, the Cougars were intent on claiming an automatic bid to the National Championships. Storer ran his best race of the year in snowy conditions, claiming sixth place overall to help his team to a second place finish and automatic qualification to Nationals. Once there, Storer was part of a team that notched their best finish in program history, taking 17th place as the Cougars finished on the podium with a trophy in third place. The finish earned Matt the first All-American honor of his time at CCU.

Storer continued in the Indoor Track & Field season by qualifying for Nationals in the 5000m. He ran a strong race in Virginia, staying steady throughout to claim fifth place and take home yet another All-American honor.

In the Outdoor Track season, Matt continued to excel in his distance races, making it to the National Championships in the 5k and 10k. He began with the 10k on the first day of competition, and the redshirt freshman put together a great race to take fourth in Pueblo for an All American nod. A few days later he took his talents to the 5k, and after some late drama with the final lap bell, Storer claimed second place for his best finish yet and fourth All American honor of the 2022-23 season.

After an excellent first season with the Cougars, Storer was even better in 2023 as he was once again at the forefront of the cross country teams' success. With a slew of strong results leading up to Regionals, Matt took fourth place in what is widely regarded as the best region in the country as the team claimed fifth overall and earned a bid to Nationals. At the championships in Missouri, Storer ran a tremendous race as he flew to a third place finish and led his team to eighth place overall with his All American performance.

Storer continued to excel as he qualified for both the 5k and 10k at the Indoor Track & Field National Championships. In the 5k, Matt ran to a fifth place finish to garner All American honors. In the 10k, Storer ran to an eight place finish for his second All American honor at the Indoor Championships.

In the Outdoor Track & Field season in 2024, Storer once again qualified for Nationals in both the 5k and 10k. He began with the 10k, setting a personal best to claim fifth place and his eighth All-American honor of his career. He followed up with another stellar run in the 5k as he took 14th for another All-American nod.

At the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season, Storer was honored by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, a prestigious award that was well deserved by the outstanding student-athlete.

The 2024 cross country season saw Storer begin with a victory at the Black Hills XC Invite, a second place finish at the Lewis Crossover and a seventh place finish at Regionals. The team made their fifth straight appearance at the National Championships, and Matt ran an excellent race, closing strong to claim fourth place and help his team to an 11th place finish. The All-American honor for Storer marked the 10th in his incredible career so far at CCU.

Matt has been one of the top runners in the country for more than three years of competition, and he continues to excel in every event he participates in. As the Track & Field season resumes in 2025, Storer will look to add to his already incredible 10 All-American honors and cement his legacy as the most decorated athlete that has ever come through Colorado Christian.
