DENVER, CO- The Cougars closed their final power pod of the season as they took on CSU Pueblo on Friday night inside the Regis Field House. It was a tight affair throughout, but the Thunderwolves narrowly claimed the four set victory.
An early run put CSUP up 8-3 early on, and they continued that momentum all the way to a 25-12 victory in set one.
Renee Phillips notched a quick ace and kill to put her team ahead 8-5, while a block from
Janelle Deboer and
Sierra Crist sent CCU ahead 12-10. A big run from CSUP midway through the set put them on top 21-15, and they closed out the set 25-18.
Set three was back and forth to start as the score stood tied at 9-9, but CCU went on a run to score five straight off a kill from
Alissa Gregory-Obiedo and an ace from
Savannah Majeski to claim a 14-9 advantage. A Deboer kill made it 20-14, and a five point run to close gave CCU the 25-15 set win off a Gregory-Obiedo kill.
The Thunderwolves scored the first four points of the fourth set, but CCU clawed back to tie the game at 16-16. Phillips and
Emily Darwin notched a huge block for a 19-16 lead, but CSUP rallied to take a 22-20 lead. Crist saved a match point at 24-22, but CSU Pueblo closed it out eventually 25-22.
Suzanna Conner paced the offense with nine kills, followed by Phillips with eight and Gregory-Obiedo with six.
Kate Ringer had 17 assists, while
Danielle Seabern had 13.
Kristina House tallied 18 digs, while Phillips had four blocks.
The Cougars resume RMAC play with four straight games at home to close the regular season, beginning with a matchup with Adams State on November 8 at 3 p.m. MST.
