LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars returned home Saturday afternoon for a non-conference pod play matchup with crosstown rivals MSU Denver. The Roadrunners proved too much on this day as the visitors won in straight sets.
The first set started out tight, as a
Renee Phillips kill and Roadrunner service error made it 6-5. From there, MSU Denver took control with a 9-0 run to go up 15-5, and they rolled to a 25-13 set win.
The two teams battled early on in set two, with
Suzanna Conner and
Connelly Kilgore putting down kills to keep their team close at 12-10. A Phillips kill and block by Kilgore and Phillips brought CCU within 18-17, but the Roadrunners caught fire from there, scoring seven of the last eight points of the set for a 25-18 win.
CCU brought the fight in the third set, scoring the first four points with a Phillips kill and block from
Krista Traynor and
Janelle Deboer. The teams battled to a 13-13 tie, and a Deboer and Kilgore block saw the hosts take an 18-15 lead. MSU Denver would take the next five points, but
Karen Salinger within 23-22 late with a kill. The Roadrunners managed to get the final two points of the match as they claimed a 25-22 set win for the sweep.
Kilgore paced the offense with 11 kills, followed by Phillips with eight. Traynor registered a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs, while
Kristina House tallied nine digs.
The Cougars will resume RMAC play with a trip to CSU Pueblo on October 7 with first serve slated for 6 p.m. MDT.
