Cougars Push UCCS to the Brink in Tight Loss

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO- CCU headed south on Saturday to take on UCCS for the second time this season. After winning on their home floor earlier this season, CCU was unable to claim the victory on the Mountain Lions home court as the hosts claimed a narrow 72-66 victory.

Dasiya Jones started what would be another stellar night with an early layup, and Nicole Bowlin converted a layup in transition to get the offense rolling. Hayley Luther made a layup and Victoria Perez drilled a jumper to tie things at 11-11. A jumper and layup from Jones saw CCU go up 16-14, but a late run gave UCCS a 19-16 lead after quarter one.

Perez quickly tied the game with a three-pointer while four straight from Jones put her team on top again 25-24. The Mountain Lions would go on a run to take an eight point lead, and they would ultimately head to halftime with a 40-33 advantage.

The home team began to pull away in the third quarter, going on a 15-2 run to open things. A three-pointer from Josie Grosdidier helped cut into the lead while a late Jones jumper sent the teams to the final quarter with UCCS on top 60-45.

CCU showed a lot of resiliency in the fourth quarter as they fought to chip away at the Mountain Lions lead. 7 quick points led by a three from Mia Guest cut the lead to just 8 at 60-52, and the Cougars continued to keep pace and slowly tighten the gap throughout the quarter. With 1:59 to play, Perez connected on a three-pointer to make it 67-61, but UCCS was able to make their free throws down the stretch as a late Bowlin three was not quite enough in the eventual 72-66 setback.

Jones poured in 22 points and 8 rebounds, while Bowlin and Perez tacked on 13 points apiece.

CCU will continue play on the road with a January 20 trip to New Mexico Highlands with tipoff set for 5 p.m. MST.
