CCU Open Series at Rogers State with Doubleheader

CLAREMORE, OK- After weather pushed their series back two days, CCU began play at Rogers State on Sunday with a doubleheader. In a low scoring first game, the Hillcats came away with a 5-1 victory and followed by dealing the Cougars a 9-3 setback in game two.

GAME ONE
RSU started fast with a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage. They tacked on two more in the third to go up 4-0. Zach Valentine notched a fielder's choice RBI to bring CCU closer, but the Hillcats responded in the fourth with a run to push the lead back to four runs at 5-1. The two teams were unable to get anything going after the fifth inning as the hosts came away with a 5-1 victory.

Brady Ritzmann went five innings on the mound with three strikeouts, while Jaxon Simmons pitched a scoreless final three innings.

GAME TWO
The second contest was lower scoring to start as both teams were unable to plate any runs in the first two innings of play. Rogers State broke through for three runs in the third inning, but CCU brought a run back in the fourth off an RBI double from Mason Hagel-Pitt.

Things remained at 3-1 until the seventh when the Hillcats tallied two more to make it 5-1. Nathan Owens notched an RBI on a sac fly in the eighth, but a four run eighth from RSU put things out of reach. Gregory Rangel closed the scoring with a single to right field, but in the end CCU fell 9-3.

Saxton Sorenson was stellar with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings of work with just 4 hits allowed. Hagel-Pitt, Owens and Rangel led the offense with an RBI apiece.

The Cougars will close their series at Rogers State with a single game on February 24 at 11 a.m. MST.
