Extra-Inning Thriller Caps Doubleheader Sweep at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, CO- The Cougars took on Fort Lewis in a doubleheader on Friday on the road in their third RMAC series of the season. After a dominant 11-0 victory in game one, a 10-inning thriller ensued in game two, and CCU broke through for a 4-1 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

GAME ONE
A big first inning started with a Leah Garcia RBI double, and Danae Lopez singled in another run for an early 2-0 lead. Kat Hanson singled home another run while Camryn Quilling scored on an error for a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.

Things slowed down offensively from there as neither team was able to score any runs for the next three innings. The Cougars roared back to life in the fifth with a pair of runs, and they tacked on another in the sixth on a Rachel Williams sac fly for a 7-0 advantage.

Mia Stankiewicz tallied an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh, and Cheyenne Stark singled in run number 9 for her team. Elyse McMullin finished the scoring with a two-run double as the Cougars ran away with a dominant 11-0 victory.

McMullin picked up win number 4 with a complete game effort as she shutout the Skyhawks with only three hits allowed. McMullin and Hanson paced the offense with 2 RBI apiece.

GAME TWO
The second contest of the day featured a much different look than the first as it was a pitcher;s duel between Emma Duncan and the Skyhawks' Hailie Mann. The pair combined to allow no runs for the first four innings of the game before CCU broke through in the fifth with a Lauren Garcia sac fly. Fort Lewis responded in their half of the inning with a run as the teams stood level again.

Duncan briefly exited in the 7th, but she reentered and got a huge strikeout to end the inning. After a scoreless 8th and 9th inning, the Cougars broke through in the tenth. Leah launched a double to left field that caromed off the glove of the left fielder to score Quilling, and Lopez delivered the decisive blow with a massive two-run homer to left field for a 4-1 lead. Carson Griggs sealed the deal with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th to close a thrilling 4-1 victory.

Duncan pitched 7 strong innings while Griggs snagged the victory with three shutout innings in extras for her first victory of the season. Lopez's two-run shot was the decisive blow as Lauren and Leah each tallied an RBI.

The Cougars close their series at Fort Lewis March 1 with game times set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. MST at Aspen Field in Durango.
