Cougars Close Series vs Newman with Extra Inning Thriller

LAKEWOOD, CO- CCU closed their three-game series against Newman on Saturday at All Star Park. In a back and forth affair that went to extra innings, the visiting Jets found late offense to claim the 12-10 victory in 10 innings.

Newman jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning as they used a double and error to plate three. CCU came back with a huge second inning that was also helped out by an error. William Brassil and Nathan Owens scored on an error, and the bases stood loaded for Mason Hagel-Pitt. The junior delivered in a huge way, roping an RBI triple to left centerfield to clear the bases and give his team a 5-3 lead after two.

A questionable balk and subsequent error allowed Newman to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth, but an Owens sac fly in their half of the fifth made it 6-5 CCU. Owens came through again for his team in the seventh, ripping a two RBI single to stretch the lead to 8-5. The score stood there till the ninth inning when the Jets began to mount their rally.

A double made it a two-run game, and an RBI single and two RBI double stunned CCU as the visitors surged ahead 9-8. Major Maydon made sure his team would not go down without throwing another punch, leading off the ninth with a monstrous slam to right field that tied the game at 9-9. The teams battled into extra innings, and with a runner being placed on second, Newman advanced him with a bunt and scored on a double. They managed to tack on two more runs for a 12-9 lead. Despite their best efforts, a single run in the bottom of the 10th was not enough as Newman shocked CCU with a 12-10 extra inning victory.

Saxton Sorenson went a strong six innings with 5 strikeouts and just 4 earned runs allowed. Hagel-Pitt and Owens led the offense as they each recorded 3 RBI.

The Cougars will head to Oklahoma for the second time this season as they begin a  four-game set at Central Oklahoma on February 14 with first pitch set for 2 p.m. MST.
