CCU Fall in Saturday Doubleheader vs UCCS

LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars closed their three-game set with a doubleheader against UCCS on Saturday at home. After a 13-3 game one loss, CCU played much better in game two before eventually falling 8-4.

GAME ONE
The Mountain Lions plated a pair of runs in the first, and they took a 3-0 lead in the second. Connor Laeng singled in Aiden Welsh in the second to close the gap, but a big third inning that featured 7 runs from UCCS made it 9-1. Mason Hagel-Pitt brought in another run on a groundout, and Sawyer Shepherd singled home a run for a 10-3 deficit. The Mountain Lions plated three more runs to close out a 13-3 victory.

GAME TWO
A much closer game two ensued, and the Cougars struck first blood on a Hagel-Pitt single in the first. A solo homer from UCCS tied things in the third, but a big fifth inning saw the hosts take a 4-1 lead. Welsh notched an RBI groundout, and Nathan Owens plated two more with a single to right field.

Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions broke through with a 5-run sixth inning, and they continued with two more in the 7th as they closed the comeback 8-4 victory.

Saxton Sorenson had a strong game on the mound, striking out 9 batters in 5.2 innings of work. Owens provided the biggest hit with his two-run single in the fifth.

Colorado Christian will close non-conference play with a single game at home against Regis at 2 p.m. MST on March 2.
