Huge First Inning, Strong Pitching Lead Cougars to Series Opening Win vs Adams State

LAKEWOOD, CO- Colorado Christian opened up their first home RMAC series on Friday against Adams State in a single nine-inning contest at All Star Park. After a five-run first inning, the pitching locked it down and controlled the game for an important 8-4 victory.

The offense was hot from the very beginning, starting with four straight singles in the first five batters. William Brassil plated the first run of the game with an RBI knock, and Major Maydon followed with another RBI single to make it 2-0. Lukas Hinze then stepped up and launched a massive three-run home run to right field as the Cougars jumped ahead 5-0 after one.

Zachary Hill got the start on the mound and he was excellent throughout. The junior transfer blew past the Grizzlies with three scoreless innings, getting ahead in the count early and taking advantage of strong defensive play behind him. Adams State scraped a run across in the fourth, but CCU had a response. Nathan Owens lifted a sac fly to make it 6-1, and Connor Laeng deposited another ball over the fence with a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 8-1. Three runs in the seventh were not enough for ASU as Jack Cazin and Luis Acuña closed things out pitching for a quality 8-4 win.

Hill notched his first win of the season as he scattered eight hits across six innings of work with four strikeouts and just one run allowed. Hinze and Laeng paced the offense with their homers as the bats were rolling all day long with 14 hits as eight different batters registered a hit.

The Cougars continue their series against the Grizzlies on March 15 with a doubleheader set for 12 and 3 p.m. MST from All Star Park.
