LAKEWOOD, CO- The Cougars continued their series with Adams State at All Star Park with a doubleheader on Saturday. After falling behind early, CCU showed great resilience to comeback and claim a 6-5 victory in game one. The Grizzlies responded with an 8-6 victory in game two as the two teams split the doubleheader on a chilly afternoon in Colorado.
GAME ONE
The first inning did not go as planned for the hosts as ASU scored four runs in the first inning of play.
Mason Hagel-Pitt brought a run back in the bottom half of the first as he roped a single to plate
Gavin Acosta. Acosta picked up an RBI of his own in the second as he singled to score
Lukas Hinze and make it 4-2.
Adams State went ahead 5-2 with a run in the fifth, but it was the Cougars who took over from there. Hagel-Pitt led off the fifth with a solo home run as the momentum started to swing in favor of the home team. Hinze then delivered a massive two-run bomb to left field as the score stood level at 5-5. Heading to the bottom of the sixth it remained tied, but
William Brassil changed that with a two-out solo homer that he deposited well over the fence in right field to give his team the 6-5 lead.
Austin DeMello came in and took care of business in the seventh, striking out the final batter to pick up the save and close out the 6-5 victory.
Saxton Sorenson was impressive on the mound, pitching six innings with seven strikeouts as he picked up the well deserved win. DeMello notched the first save of his collegiate career with his final inning of work. CCU used the long ball to claw their way back and win the game as Hagel-Pitt, Hinze and Brassil provided the big hits for their team.
GAME TWO
CCU took advantage of a bit of fortune in the first inning of game two as they took an early 2-0 lead off a costly error by the ASU second baseman.
Major Maydon doubled home a run in the third to make it a 3-0 advantage. The Grizzlies tied things up in the fourth as a solo and two run homer leveled the game at 3-3.
Another long ball in the fifth from ASU saw them jump ahead 6-3, but CCU would not back down. Hagel-Pitt raced home on a wild pitch in the fifth, and
Gregory Rangel singled home Brassil to make it 6-5. Two more runs in the sixth from the Grizzlies gave them an 8-5 lead, and a run in the sixth from the Cougars was not enough as they fell 8-6 in game two.
Jaxon Simmons went five innings on the mound with a pair of strikeouts.
Chad Naf pitched the final two innings for his team. Eight different Cougars notched a hit in the narrow loss.
Colorado Christian will close their series with Adams State on March 16 with a single contest slated to start at 12 p.m. MST.
